Patina or Pahhhtiiiinahh……..How to Achieve it with Paint!

Patina or Pahhhtiiiinahh……..How to Achieve it with Paint!

Patina (/ˈpætɨnə/ or /pəˈtnə/) is a tarnish that forms on the surface of copper, bronze and similar metals (produced by oxidation or other chemical processes

Patina. I just love saying that word. I love the way the vowels mix with the consonants to make such a glamorous sounding word. Patina describes the oxidized look on a piece of metal, that has has happened over time.

It can take years to get a gorgeous patina on a piece of metal. But now, you can have a jaw dropping patina instantly with the magic of Modern Masters Metal Effects Paints. Yep, that’s right. Paint that Patinas!

Modern Masters has a line of Metallic paints in a range of colors. When used with one of their aging solutions, you can take a plain piece of furniture, a wall, basically anything you can paint and make it look like it has been around for ages.

I decided to go big. No small wimpy frames or decorative pieces. I wanted Patina on a grand scale. I chose this basic sofa table. After I cleaned it up and smoothed out the rough patches, I got started.

You need to start with Modern Masters Metal Primer. It goes on easily and dries quickly. You can move to the fun part fast!

Now choose your metal. I chose Bronze with a green aging solution.

I painted one coat and let it dry thoroughly. I applied a 2nd coat, but I didn’t have to wait for it to dry. In fact, you want to use the aging solution while your metal effects paint is still wet. I decided to go with a heavy hand. I used a round soft brush, and literally “plopped” it on all over. I let it run down the legs and kind of make a general mess.

The aging process starts right away, and it is fun to watch! This is one of those times when watching paint dry is very exciting. As it was drying, I decided to change the patina just a bit. I wadded up a shop towel and blotted it where I thought it was particularly heavy. This caused it to darken a bit, but I really love the variegated look it produced.

Once your piece is completely dry, you do not need to seal it. The paint is very durable. However, the patina will continue to actually evolve over time. You can choose to let nature continue to change your piece, or you can seal it to stop the process. In this photo, the sun is hitting half of it. Isn’t that amazing how different it looks in just a shift in light?

I decided to seal my piece with one of my favorite 100% natural furniture waxes.

I buffed the entire piece to a high shine, and stood back to ooo and ahhhh at my Patina. It looks extra amazing with an added glow.
