Outside Door Makeover + Front Door Paint

Outside Door Makeover + Front Door Paint
Outside Door Makeover

Last week I showed you our small backyard makeover, that included a new flagstone and reclaimed brick patio, a new lawn and our simple landscaping with flowers and vegetables. One part of the yard that was still in need of attention was the garage man door. You see this door from the yard and it had never been painted, so I gave it a simple makeover with the new Front Door Paint by Modern Masters.

This door needed lots of attention. My plan was to do the following:

  1. Remove plywood from back of door
  2. Cut glass to fit as replacement for a missing window in the door
  3. Patch holes in door with wood fill
  4. Prime and paint both sides of the door
  5. Cover windows with window film
  6. Cut board to fit on back of door over windows

For any makeover, even one as simple as an exterior door, you need to see before pictures. The door was an off white color and was missing a window. The previous owners thought it would be OK to nail on a piece of plywood to cover up the missing window and just paint over it from the outside. It wasn’t exactly the look I was going for.

Since the plywood fix didn’t cover both windows, they then decided to spray paint over the exposed glass with black paint. Oh, we need a blog for previous homeowner mistakes don’t we? It was a terrible idea. The paint was pretty dirty and needed holes filled in.

The back of the door was even worse. It was a random collection of spray paint colors and was very dirty. Makeover needed right this way!

Garage Door Makeover

I got to try the new Front Door Paint by Modern Masters for this makeover and it turned out to be the perfect solution. Since I’ve used their metallic paint on lamps and curtains before, I new the Front Door Paint would work just as great for this outside project.

So I got to work. First, I took off the plywood and began patching the door. Then I gave it two coats of Zinsser Bin 1-2-3 primer, as directed on the Front Door Paint jar. If your door is already painted and you are changing the color only slightly, you don’t need to prime. But if you are going from a light to a dark color or vice versa, it’s a good idea to prime the door in preparation.

Since white paint can be tricky sometimes {I find it the most difficult to paint over with white}, I did two coats of primer and two coats of paint.

The new Front Door Paint by Modern Masters has three great qualities:

  1. It’s quick drying so there’s less time in between coats and your project can be done faster
  2. There are 24 opaque colors for easy two-coat coverage
  3. The paint never fades

Here is how the door came out after! I used the color Hopeful, which is a white, although there are 23 other colors to choose from if you are looking for something bold for your front door. First, the inside of the door. We still might do something with that piece of hardboard covering the windows. Although we could have replaced the door entirely to avoid having glass, this was a solution for now.

And here is the front side of the door. I got a piece of glass to fit the space where there wasn’t any and put up frosted window film for privacy. All of the holes in the wood got filled in nicely and the fresh white paint is a welcome change from the dirty off white of before.

The envelope planter I made to use on the hook by the door. I’ll show you how to make one soon. Finally we have a good looking door to go with our new backyard.

You can find the Front Door Paint at select Lowes stores and can order it online here. We have a bit leftover so I might even use it on my side door too. Many thanks to Modern Masters for the opportunity to try this product!
