Modern Masters Front Door Paint

Disclosure: I was given the front door paint from Modern Masters to use. All opinions are 100% mine. I only recommend products I use and love.

I met the wonderful people from Modern Masters paint at Snap! Conference. They told me all about their new Front Door Paint Collection and I was looking forward to being able to try it out. It was perfect timing because our front door has been in desperate need of a makeover for some time.

We had our house painted professionally about two years ago. The house looks great, but they did not do a good job on the front door. Our painters painted and stained everything with paint sprayers. This is fine, but he sprayed our door with it shut. So anytime the door was open you would see the edge of the door that touches the frame that was not painted. There was literally a line around the entire door that had the old paint showing.

Plus, he painted the oil based paint right over the kick plate and it was chipping off so badly. The paint on the frame of the storm door is also chipping off and will need to be re-done.

To repaint a door you need to clean the door, sand it, prime it and paint it. The part that had me sold about this paint though was that it only takes 2 hours to dry! My door could go back up the same day it was taken down! This was a huge plus for me.

The hardest part was choosing a color. Our house is a light tan color and the trim is off white. Our door was also painted an off white color. I definitely wanted a color that would give a little insight into our personalities and what we have going on inside our house. After some discussion with my husband we settled on a light green color called “Fortunate“.

All of the colors are chosen based on the emotional color wheel and the mood they are supposed to invoke. I think fortunate is a great emotion to have!

We took the door down and removed all the hardware, which included hinges, door knob, dead bolt lock, door knocker and kick plate. The easiest way to do this is to remove the pins in the hinges.

While we had the door down we also replaced the weather strip on the bottom of the door. I don’t think it was ever replaced!

None of the hardware matches in our house. When we originally bought the house we purchased a new door knob and dead bolt for the front door. At that time I was a little naive and thought we would be able to replace all the hinges and knobs in the entire house. So, I purchased a nickel finish door knob thinking we would eventually have all nickel fixtures in the house. It is way too expensive for us to do it. We have specialty hinges on the doors and it would cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

So, while I had the door down and the fixtures off I spray painted everything with a antique brass spray paint. I will share details about that project in another post coming soon.

We placed the door on two saw horses and I washed the door really well to remove any oil and dirt.

We sanded the door using our Ryobi sander. We ended up having to use the belt sander on a few parts that were really bad. And we used sand paper to get in a few of the detailed spots.

I taped off the glass pieces at the top of the door as well as the holes for the door knobs since the mechanical parts to the door knobs were still attached.

We then added a coat of primer using a small foam roller and a brush. We used Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer that was recommended by Modern Masters.

We let the primer dry for about an hour and then got to work painting with our new Modern Masters front door paint. We ended up using 3 light coats with both a foam roller and a brush. I think if you use just the brush you should be able to get it painted with only two coats of paint, but the roller doesn’t cover as well.

Once the door was dry (only 2 hours later) we added all the hardware back on. I purchased a new kick plate for the door since the other one was in bad shape and I didn’t want to deal with having to strip the paint off of it.

Now our front porch is so much fun! I love how bright and fun the front door is now.
