Hey guys! I had to share one of my all time favorite projects (to date)! My client Kristi brought me this boring {no offense Kristi} oak wardrobe and the fabric from her crib bedding. She had a vision based on an armoire she’d seen on Pinterest. The drawers of the armoire were all painted differently and the hardware was mismatched. She wanted that same funky vibe for her nursery and gave me complete artistic freedom! Can you say Dream Client?!? So, before I give you all the details, enjoy this before and after shot:
I started out by gathering paper, hardware, and other items from around the shop to gussy up the drawer fronts. I didn’t go for matchy {chevron stripes, exact colors etc}, I went for coordinating. There is a big difference!
Then, I laid out the drawers, rearranged things a million times before settling on an order. To save my self a headache I took pics so I could remember the order later.
The body of the wardrobe was painted with Websters Chalk Paint Powder™ and Benjamin Moore’s Venezuelan Sea. I lightly distressed the edges then sealed with my custom clear coat.
The first drawer was painted with Shabby Paints, So Serene, and sealed with Shabby Paints Vax. This was the first time I used these products and I loved them! The paint went on smooth and like all chalk based products, dried nice and quick! The Vax, which is designed to be used in lieu of wax was really easy to use too. I used a soft cloth and simply wiped it on. I did come back later and gave it a little buffing. It finishes close to a satin. I framed the drawer front by cutting down a large frame with a miter saw. I used wood glue and my nail gun to attach it. The cute little glass pull is from Hobby Lobby.
The second drawer was painted with a custom mixed BM color+Websters Chalk Paint Powder™ mixture. I sealed with Daddy Vans Lavender Furniture Polish…aka, aromatherapy in a jar! I am STOKED to be bringing this product to Arkansas and making it available to my clients!! For the drawer pull, I used a wooden base from Hobby Lobby {stained} and an old hose clamp. The clamp was in a box lot I won at an auction last year. Most of the items in the box were trash but I kept several of these, just because I liked the way they looked! It had such a cool patina to it! I love the contrast next to the stained wood! So satisfying when my oddball “keeps” turn out to be the perfect thing for a project down the road!
The third drawer was painted with Websters Chalk Paint Powder™ and Behr’s Eggshell Cream. I added scrapbook paper to the center, again, coordinating but not matching, then trimmed that with base shoe molding. We just had new flooring installed and this was leftover. It was the perfect size and added the perfect amount of dimension I had in mind for this drawer. The stripes are painted with the same shades of paint on the other drawers. This drawer was sealed with Modge Podge, which is best for sealing paper. The hardware on this drawer came from a vintage, modern lined dresser. I just turned the pull sideways
The fourth drawer is my favorite!! I have been waiting for a year to use this piece of paper!!! I did a layered finish of Eggshell Cream and the custom mixed green then added my torn paper over it. The colors were perfect and I love the feel the quotation brings! This drawer was also sealed with Modge Podge. The hardware on this one was a knob from an old buffet I painted a few years back. Hoarding pays off!
The fifth drawer was painted with Websters Chalk Paint Powder™ and Benjamin Moore’s Orange Nectar. I added Shabby Paints shimmer glaze in Copper Kettle to give the perfect amount of shimmery texture! The hardware consists of a back plate from a nightstand and a brass knob from an antique dresser.
I covered the bottom drawer with strips of raw wood, leftover from my crate making last year. I stained each plank with different shades of stain prior to attaching them. I used a little wood glue and my handy dandy air nailer to attach them. From American Oak to Ebony, they will coordinate well with the factory stained crib. The pull on the bottom drawer is from Hobby Lobby. I painted it and the trim of the drawer with Modern Masters Metallic Paint in Champagne. I also took that color up to the top of the piece and trimmed the edge with a light glazing.
The large door on this piece was painted with Modern Masters Metal Effects in Copper and Bronze. I probably did 4 coats, adding patina to each. The simple glass knob is from Hobby Lobby.
I also got to makeover this dry sink basin that will be used as a changing table! I’m thrilled with the way the pieces came together and I can’t wait to see Kristi’s Nursery all put together!
Shew! I told you I used a bazillion products! I feel like this is the perfect opportunity to say how proud I am to NOT be a brand loyalist!! Yes, I sell products I adore but you will never hear me say the products I represent are the only way to go! I LOVE being able to use all the amazing products on the market to give my client the custom piece they dream of!
