There are so many projects I’d love to do in my house. It’s like I have too many ideas and not enough time to make them happen. Recently I showed you the master bedroom makeover plans and today’s project is the first for the space. I’m going to show you the DIY stenciled curtains that I made for a unique and custom look. They add a little pizzazz too!
Materials
- Pair of curtains – I used the white RITVA curtains from Ikea. We had them in the dining room for a while, but I replaced them with a lined pair last year. They were a blank canvas for me to use, and were perfect for a stencil.
- Your favorite stencil – I got to partner with Cutting Edge Stencils for a makeover I did in our upstairs hallway and my fabulous friends there sent me the Tea House Trellis stencil and couldn’t wait to use it on my white curtains. I’d been eying that pattern as you probably saw in my pins here and here.
- Paint in the color you want to use. I chose a bold metallic paint.
- Paint tray and paint brush
- Plastic sheeting or table cloth {I had one from the dollar store}
- Painters tape
Instructions
You might be surprised to learn I do many of my craft projects right in the dining room. Since we don’t have a nice and fancy real wood table, I use two folding tables put together. Which is a perfect solution since it gives me lots of space. Here is how to DIY stenciled curtains.
First, lay out the plastic table cloth on the table or floor where you are working and tape it down using painters tape. Then lay the curtain on top of it. After that you are going to place your stencil in the top center of the curtain and tape it down with painters tape.
As soon as you have the stencil on the fabric, you are ready to go. To paint these, I used a paint brush. I know some people use a roller to do stencils like this, but I wasn’t sure if I’d have enough paint so I tried the brush and it worked out great.
Lightly dip the brush in the paint, wiping most of it off, and paint inside the open stencil parts. Here is what it looked like when I got started and soon I was done with 1 whole stencil. Only 57 left to go
Slide the curtains down the table as you complete a row and soon enough you’ll have all of them finished. This was 2 panels, so once the first was finished, I let it dry overnight then moved it to start the second one.
Here is a completed panel on the table.
Here is a close up of the pattern, using the paint brush made really sharp lines so I was glad.
There is actually a second part to this project, which is how to make your own lined curtains like I did with these. So come back soon to see that. After I was done sewing an insulating later and liner, I hung them up in our bedroom.
I love how the pattern came out, the gold paint looks great against the white and the pattern is one of my favorites.
I know it’s always so hard to photograph a window, but what do you think of the pattern? Think you’d ever stencil curtains?
Now I know you smarties saw the newly painted wall in the room too. Navy! I’m addicted. Come back soon to see the before and after of that side of the room
And since this is kicking off the master bedroom makeover, here is the first item checked off the to-so list!

- Buy, paint, and install crown molding
- Make new curtains, perhaps with a pattern on them
